This is a popular migration pathway for our Burmese clients.

Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189) (Points-Tested) Stream

This stream is for points-tested skilled workers who are not sponsored by an employer or family member or nominated by a state or territory government. It allows you to live and work in Australia as a permanent resident. You will also be able to sponsor eligible relatives for permanent residence and apply for Australian citizenship, if eligible.

Eligibility Criteria

To be successful in applying for the visa, you must:

  • Be invited by the Department of Home Affairs to apply
    • You should submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) through SkillSelect with details of your nominated occupation, skills and qualifications. SkillSelect will estimate a points score and rank you against other intending migrants.
  • Have a suitable skills assessment for the occupation
    • Your occupation must be on the relevant eligible skilled occupations for the Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189).
    • You need to contact the relevant assessing authority for your occupation to obtain a skills assessment that shows that you have the skills and qualifications to work in your nominated occupation. In almost all cases, you will need to have university or trade qualifications in order to receive a positive assessment of your skills.
  • Meet the points test pass mark of 65 points
    • You can use the points table to calculate your score
    • Achieving 65 points does not guarantee that you will be invited. You will be ranked against other intending applicants and generally, applicants with a higher score will be invited to apply for the visa first.
  • Be under 45 years of age at the time of invitation
  • Have competent English
    • You must have achieved a score of at least 6 in each of the four test components (speaking, reading, listening and writing) in an International English Language Testing System (IELTS).
