Prime Minister Scott Morrison is considering ideas to direct migrants to regional areas. This is to prevent further congestion in Sydney and Melbourne. One idea is to incentivise migrants by using a points system to fast track temporary workers who choose to settle in areas other than Sydney and Melbourne. Smaller capital cities like Adelaide, Hobart and Perth want more people to settle there while Sydney and Melbourne, who experienced rapid growth doesn’t.

The PM is also considering slowing the flow of international students to institutions in Sydney and Melbourne.

David Coleman, the new Immigration Minister said that “As the Morrison Government focuses on building Australia’s prosperity, one of my aims as Minister will be to continue to advocate for the right policies to ensure that our nation continues to build on our immigration success story”, he said on 7 September 2018.

Migration is projected to contribute $1.6 trillon to Australia’s economy by 2050.
